2020 is a year of recognising Birmingham’s longstanding relationship with Hong Kong. This year we will be sharing alumni stories and recognising their achievements, following a gala launch in October 2019 - were you there?
The University of Birmingham takes pride in being a truly global institution, with alumni located in 178 countries throughout the world.
The University’s links with Hong Kong are particularly strong, with connections going back decades. Records suggest our first student from the territory graduated in 1962*, with many going on to successful careers in business, engineering, and the social sciences in the years since.
Nearly 3,000 graduates are now based in Hong Kong and many retain strong connections with their alma mater by attending events, offering their expertise as volunteer mentors, or supporting the University as donors.
*Please get in touch with the alumni communications team if you or a member of your family from Hong Kong graduated from Birmingham before 1962!
Launching a year of recognition
Almost 150 alumni and supporters attended a cocktail reception at the Asia Society Hong Kong Center for the launch of the year of celebration of Birmingham's relationship with Hong Kong. The evening culminated with the inaugural award of the new, prestigious University of Birmingham Hong Kong Medal to the Honourable Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma (LLB Law, 1977; LLD 2011).
