#MadeatUni: Transforming Transplants

Ground-breaking liver transplant research at the University is featured in the UK’s 100 Best Breakthroughs as part of Universities UK’s #MadeAtUni campaign.

Birmingham has been at the forefront of liver transplantation since the pioneering work of Nobel Prize winner Sir Peter Medawar.

Each year 400 donated livers are rejected as too high risk for transplantation. Researchers at the University are using a perfusion machine, which acts as a life support machine for donors’ livers, to determine whether or not a liver, usually deemed too high risk for transplant, would actually function when transplanted.

This could increase the number of organs available for transplant and reduce the waiting lists. Meet liver transplant patients Amy and Alan and discover more about the research in this video.

The #MadeAtUni campaign aims to bring to life the impact UK universities have on people, lives and communities.
