Discover the history of the University

The visual history of the University can now be explored by visitors to Aston Webb with a major new exhibition to mark our 125th anniversary.

The exhibition, Largely in your hands: making and shaping a university, takes its name from the words spoken by King Edward VII at our formal opening in 1909: ‘To the students I say that the honour and dignity of this university are largely in your hands, and I look to you to initiate and hand down worthy traditions to your successors.’

Selecting from the 10,000 objects and artworks housed across the Edgbaston campus, the exhibition also features the voices of staff, students and alumni. It is split into three themes: ‘What can a University be?’, ‘In it together’ and ‘Life lessons’, and includes a section called ‘The gathering place’ where visitors can offer feedback.

The exhibition is due to run until June 2028 and alumni are warmly invited to come and explore it.
